Vicksburg National Military Park invites public comment on the National Park Service’s plan to redesign the primary gateway and entrance road access at the intersection of Clay Street and Old Highway 27 in Vicksburg, Miss.

“The entrance to Vicksburg National Military Park is an important arrival experience for our visitors, and it no longer meets the needs of our visitation patterns, pedestrian safety and operational needs,” said Vicksburg National Miliary Park Superintendent Treacy Stone. “We encourage visitors to review the design proposals and provide feedback. Public input will inform the final design of the entrance area to ensure that we provide our visitors with a safe and enjoyable experience.”

Currently, the roadway design creates congestion and threatens visitors’ safety. The redesign proposal aims to:

  • reduce pedestrian and vehicular conflicts
  • enhance traffic circulation
  • provide more efficient and intuitive access to park facilities
  • accommodate current and future visitor use
  • better protect and preserve significant historic monuments and commemorative features
