A Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy received a dog bite while serving a warrant. The deputy shot the dog in self-defense.

At around noon on Tuesday, a Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy was serving a warrant on Bradford Drive, off of Fisher Ferry, and was bitten by a dog. While serving the warrant, the suspect resisted and got into a physical altercation with the deputy. The dog jumped in to defend its owner. The deputy shot the dog in self-defense.

“The deputy was attempting to serve a warrant on Bradford Drive, the individual resisted, and he had to go hands-on. When he did, the suspect’s dog attacked the deputy. The deputy is injured, does not appear to be serious. He is en-route to River Region to be checked out. He did have to shoot the dog. The dog is alive and on the way to a vet,” said Sheriff Martin Pace. “It’s a terrible thing when the dog is doing what he thought he was supposed to do. It’s not the dog’s fault, but when the suspect resisted, and the deputy had to go hands-on, the dog charged the deputy, and the deputy had to protect himself.”

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene without further incident. The deputy shall remain unnamed until it is appropriate to release the name.

Sheriff Pace indicated the incident was under investigation and the results of that investigation would determine what additional charges the suspect may face.
